ESL Newcomers Lessons Back to School Activities and Worksheets: All About Me
As we gear up for a brand-new school year, many of us, Teachers of ELLs, find ourselves reflecting on an important question: What's the best way to support my newcomers, beginners, and intermediate English Language Learners (ELL) this time around? While I pondered over strategies and resources, one thing became crystal clear – building relationships and forging connections with my ELL students is an absolute game-changer.Why Building Relationships Matters for English Language Learners: Imagine stepping into a new country, a new school, and a new classroom, all while navigating a language that isn't your native tongue.
This is the reality for our ELL students, and it's why the foundation of strong relationships becomes even more significant. Here's why:
1. Creating a Safe Haven: For newcomers, your ELS classroom is a safe haven amidst the sea of unfamiliarity. Building relationships establishes trust and helps them feel secure. When they know that their teacher and peers care, they're more likely to engage, take risks, and embrace the learning process.
2. Fostering Confidence: Beginners often grapple with self-doubt as they navigate a new language. A supportive and nurturing environment, fostered by relationships, boosts their self-confidence. When they feel valued and understood, they're more willing to participate and express themselves.
3. Encouraging Engagement: Strong relationships make the classroom an inviting space where they can engage in meaningful discussions, collaborate with peers, and take their language proficiency to the next level.
4. Addressing Cultural Sensitivities: Cultural nuances play a significant role in communication. Building relationships enables us to understand our ELL students' cultural backgrounds, allowing us to be more sensitive to their unique perspectives and experiences.
5. Tailoring Instruction: Every ELL student is on their individual language journey. Strong relationships help us understand their learning styles, strengths, and areas for improvement. This insight enables us to tailor our instruction to suit their needs, ensuring effective learning.
How to Create a Heartwarming and Welcoming Classroom: The Magic of "All About Me" Activities
"All About Me" activities are like keys to creating connections that run deep. And here are my 3 favorite back to school ESL Newcomer activities.
1. All About Me Activities: ESL Class Quilt:
This collaborative project encourages students to showcase their heritage and interests in a creative way. Through teamwork, they not only celebrate diversity but also create bonds through shared experiences.
Can you picture it? Our classroom adorned with a vibrant patchwork of colors, cultural symbols, and those precious smiles we cherish. That's the magic our "All About Me ESL Class Quilt" activity brings to life. It's a collaborative project that ignites curiosity and nurtures a sense of belonging among our ESL students. Each student gets to showcase their heritage, hobbies, and personality, weaving together a beautiful tapestry of cultures. Through teamwork, they not only honor diversity but also form deep connections and mutual understanding.
2. ESL Classroom All About Passports:
This resource lets students explore their unique backgrounds and express themselves. By sharing their stories, they feel heard and valued, fostering a sense of belonging.
I'm super excited about our "Citizens of the Word Passports" resource, and I know you'll be too. This back-to-school gem takes our students on an enthralling journey of self-discovery. They get to explore their personal backgrounds and interests in creative ways. As they jot down details about their language backgrounds, age, and more, their imagination takes center stage through writing and drawing.
3. ESL All About Me : Backpack Full of Goals
: Empowering students to set and achieve goals helps them take ownership of their learning journey. Sharing these goals with peers fosters a supportive and encouraging classroom community.
Starting the school year with a bang is on all of our minds, right? That's where the "Backpack Full of Goals" activity comes in. This bundle, cleverly shaped like a backpack, transforms goal-setting into an engaging experience. As my students personalize their backpacks, they're not just expressing their uniqueness, but they're also taking charge of their academic, social, and personal aspirations.
You can use these 3 all about me activities with 3 different groups of ELLs, or use them throughout the school year as you go.
I like to post all about me products on my bulletin board after they are completed.
Happy BTS Teaching!
